Ep232 – What Does Your Hinky Meter Tell You? Part 1

You know that feeling that something is off. It’s the feeling that things don’t quite add up. Something bugs you and you can’t quite put your finger on it. That is what detectives call your hinky meter.

We all have a hinky meter. The only question is what has your hinky meter been trained to detect.

Great auto mechanics can listen to a car and figure out what’s off. Doctors like House M.D. can suss out that a seemingly plausible diagnosis doesn’t quite make sense. And Hunter Maats a.k.a The Tutor of Death can quickly find holes in people’s mental game. That’s what sets his hinky meter off. And Fundamentalists drive his hinky meter wild.

However, just because you sense that something is off that’s not the same thing as putting your finger on it let alone fully revealing to people what is off. In this first part of a two part series, Bryan and Hunter unpack why people like Alex Jones, Tom Woods, Sam Harris, Donald Trump and Joseph McCarthy send our hinky meters wild.

Who sends your hinky meter wild? Tweet us and we miiiiiiight talk about them in part two.

Right after being born in Saudi Arabia, I was taken to the Callen house. Since then, Bryan and I have travelled the world with our Citibank fathers and somehow ended up in LA together. There we'd run into each other at family gatherings and do something that no one else in LA seemed to be doing: we talked about books. Since Bryan was kind of a big deal, Hunter and Bryan hatched a scheme to use his podcast to get on their favorite authors and professors. Out of that evolved Mixed Mental Arts and this tribe. For me, the marriage of entertainment and education is a return to how things used to be before our culture split story into two separate things. It's exciting to be able to build on the work Katie O'Brien and I did for The Straight-A Conspiracy and expand it out to every area of life. While I play a series of roles in the Mixed Mental Arts community (including Shitty Dutch Uncle and Bryan's #1 fan) my favorite role is as Toto who pulls back the curtain and let's the world see that there are no wizards...only men and women who try and puff themselves up to seem important.

Hunter, if a person adopts the ideas of a perceive “winner” instead of using his own judgment to consider the intrinsic value of the ideas, and to carefully form his opinion based on a variety of different sources, and you want to “win” the debate so he will adopt yours, instead of doing what you are doing, that is, to listen to every point of view, we a are talking of indoctrinating instead of educating. It there any value in indoctrinating people instead of educating them?

I think it would be more useful to address the root of the problem by changing the way this person behaves by making him reflect on the reasons and the value of what he is doing. In other words, by making this young person, more wise.

Anyway, great show. Keep up the good work! A big thumbs up from a fan in Argentina.

Santiago! This was all very much an experiment to figure out how to teach en masse using social media. How do you generate that mass reflection? I’m not sure if you saw my Intellectual Terrorist’s Manifesto and the follow up piece Intellectual Terrorism 101 but they’ll give you a sense of the strategy as it currently stands. Regardless, this strategy is on hold. The focus is now on moving these ideas. Speaking of which, all these ideas will need to be repackaged for a Spanish-speaking context. ¿Tiene alguna idea con quien debemos hablar? Necesitamos un podcast (o muchos podcasts) de MMA en cada lengua.
