Drink Up, Bitches

今朝有酒今朝醉/jīnzhāo yǒu jiǔ jīnzhāo zuì- Today we have liquor. Today, we get drunk.

Mound after mound of psychological research trends indicate that the way to “piece of mind” is “inner peace.” Buddhists have just called this “mindfulness” since before the time of Caeser. People worry about the mistakes the made yesterday, and fear what uncertainty tomorrow may bring. Stoic philosophy states that idea laconically; Seneca wrote, “You are afraid of dying. But, come now, how is this life of yours anything but death?”

Carpe Diem, YOLO, Smoke’m while you got’em. The West describes this impermanence and what should be done about it, too. Don’t focus on yesterday and don’t worry about tomorrow, because yesterday will never come again and tomorrow may never come. We seem to forget that we will eventually die. It’s not anyone’s fault. Death is scary. We make plans for tomorrow with good reason, too. We remember yesterday because it helps us make those plans for tomorrow. But too often, we forget to drink a fucking beer, and get drunk with our friends, for whatever reason.

Well, you’re gonna die. I’m gonna die. Everyone you’ve ever known is going to die. Every genius, every King, every emperor, every smoke show who has ever lived is either dead or will die. I’m not trying to strike fear in your heart, I’m trying to tell you the truth. It doesn’t matter what you think will happen after you die, the fact remains that everyone on this planet will die some day. And it can happen at any time. Why would you squander today worrying about tomorrow?

得即高歌,失即休
多愁多恨,亦悠悠
今朝有酒,今朝醉
明日悠來,明日悠

When you can, sing loudly, and when you can’t sing, rest
Worry and hatred are far away
Today we have booze, today we get drunk
Tomorrow we worry about tomorrow’s problems
– Luoyin, “Cheer up” (translated by Isaiah Gooley)
